Have you ever noticed that brands are always on your phone? Whether you are scrolling through Instagram or watching videos on TikTok or reading posts on X, brands are always on your screen. Social media has completely changed the way brands communicate with humans. In the past, brands communicated through television, radio, and newspapers. Today, communication is quicker, more direct, and more interactive.

As a Public Relations student at UJ, I have learnt that social media plays a very important role in brand communication and managing a company’s online reputation According to Hootsuite (2023) [https://blog.hootsuite.com/social-media-marketing/], social media is no longer just for entertainment it is now a powerful communication tool used by organisations to connect with their audiences. This blog will explore how social media is changing the way brands communicate and why it matters in today’s digital world.

The Power of Social Media in Brand Communication.

Social media offers brands the opportunity to communicate immediately to their audience. Social media platforms, like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, enable brands to communicate instantaneously to their audience, reaching millions of people at once. As HubSpot (2024) [https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/social-media-marketing] puts it, social media platforms are today a vital place where brands and consumers interact, and therefore, it is not effective to communicate to consumers in a single direction.

The two-way communication between brands and consumers helps brands to better understand their consumers, and it also helps them to establish a deeper connection with them emotionally, for instance, through comments, polls, and videos, where consumers become not only viewers but also participants.

Building an Online Brand Identity.

One major advantage of social media is the ability to build a strong brand identity. Brand identity is how a company presents itself online, its personality, tone, visuals, and values. Sprout Social (2022) [https://sproutsocial.com/insights/brand-voice/] points out that a consistent and clear brand voice helps increase recognition and trust online.

Social media gives brands an opportunity to show who they are beyond their products. For instance:

  • Spotify uses playful and relatable messages, memes, and personalized playlists to connect emotionally with its audience.
  • Wendy’s uses humour to engage its audience.

These approaches create emotional connections and memorable experiences. Brand communication is not just about selling products it’s about storytelling.

The Risks: When Social Media Goes Wrong.

While social media has many benefits, it also has many risks. A single social media message or post may damage the online reputation of a brand in no time. Social media has the capability to spread information rapidly. According to Forbes (2025) [https://www.forbes.com/sites/theyec/2025/01/15/handling-crisis-on-social-media/], crisis communication on social media requires speed, accountability, and transparency from brands during difficult moments. Being slow to respond or issuing a vague apology can make things worse.

This is exactly why companies need clear strategies for responding to online criticism and managing digital reputation. A strong plan helps protect brand trust and credibility when things go wrong.

Why Social Media Matters for PR Students?

Understanding social media is important for anyone entering public relations. PR professionals now spend a lot of time managing digital platforms, tracking trends, and engaging with audiences online.

According to Statista (2024) [https://www.statista.com/topics/1164/social-networks/], over half the world’s population uses social media that’s more than 4 billion users. This shows the global scale of social media and why brands must communicate where their audiences are most active.

As future PR professionals, we need strong digital communication skills to help brands succeed in a competitive online world.

In conclusion, social media has completely changed the way brands communicate with audiences. It makes communication fast, interactive, and personal. Brands now build relationships, share stories, and interact directly with customers all online.

However, this also means that brands must be responsible and careful with their communication. One mistake can damage a brand’s reputation, while strong communication can build loyalty and trust.

As someone preparing for a career in public relations, mastering social media communication is not just an advantage it’s essential. Social media is the future of brand communication.
